Fibrinolytic Activity in Blood Serum During Pregnancy Complicated by Hypertensive Toxemias

Abstract
The presence of fibrinolytic activity in the serum of patients with pre-eclampsia and eclampsia has been observed. Since this activity is also present following surgery and during normal menstruation, it does not appear to be a specific substance confined to pregnancy toxemias. 30 of 32 normal pregnant patients showed no or minimal lytic activity, while in 9 of 10 patients with pre-eclampsia this activity was definite. 16 of 30 patients with chronic vascular renal disease complicating pregnancy showed definite lysis; 15 of these had proteinuria and 8 edema, in this respect being similar to those with pre-eclampsia. Fibrinoly-sis was also demonstrated during menstruation and in other conditions not definitely associated with pre-eclampsia.
