Abstract
The gene is entering the vernacular in increasingly powerful images. Each day comes the announcement in the print and electronic media of the discovery of a new gene for a disease or an aspect of human behaviour. This article seeks to explore some representations of the gene in public culture in Australia today, in particular notions of death and the gene, jokes about genes, and genetic literacy. Keywords
