Abstract
Nitrogen requirements of Absidia orchidis (Vuillemin) Hagem, Absidia sp., Actinomucor elegans (Eidam) Benjamin et Hesseltine, Cunninghamella bertholletiae Stadel, Chaetocladium hesseltinii Mehrota et Sarbhoy and Mortierella indica Mehrotra were studied under controlled conditions. Nitrite N was utilized well by these fungi, but nitrate and ammonium N were good sources for some and moderate (or others. The amino acids used behaved just like ammonium N. Asparagine, L-arginine, L-histidine, and tyrosine produced good or moderate growth in all the organisms except M. indica, which did not grow at all in L-arginine and L-histidine. Acetamide, tryptophan, peptone, methionine and cystine in general supported, satisfactory growth of the various organisms. Urea, on the whole, supported moderate growth in all fungi; thiourea was less effective. The pH showed a drift towards the acid side in most of the cases. Keywords
