Abstract
A survey of all nonchronic care pediatric hospitals in the United States revealed that the majority (70%) of the hospitals offer prehospital preparation to both the parent and the child. A variety of preparation techniques are currently in use, including a narrative explanation of the hospital experience, printed materials such as story books, films, puppet shows, and other therapeutic techniques. The greatest limitation in the preoperative programs appeared to be the relatively low percentage of children served by existing programs. Suggestions regarding the reasons behind this widespread implementation of prehospital preparation and possible improvements in future preparation programs are offered. Keywords
