Occurrence of a Trypanosoma cruzi-like Organism in Some Mammals from Southwestern Georgia and Northwestern Florida

Abstract
A Trypanosoma cruzi-like organism was isolated from 93 of 552 (17%) opossums examined, 2 of 118 (1.7%) gray foxes, 9 of 608 (1.5%) raccoons, and 3 of 306 (1%) striped skunks from southwestern Georgia and northwestern Florida. Inoculation of kidney tissue in Chang''s and Fletcher''s base media with horse plasma or rabbit serum added revealed 103 infections of 1974 animals tested. Of these, 98 were isolated in primary cultures and 5 from approximately 200 subcultures. The difference in the number of isolates obtained in primary cultures from the 2 base media was not significant.
