Male Fertility during Chemotherapy for Acute Leukemia

Abstract
To the Editor: Cytotoxic drugs damage the testis and frequently cause azoospermia.1 , 2 In contrast, androgen production is only slightly affected in adults, 3 although more so in adolescents.4 Men who survive acute leukemia have rarely fathered children, and then only after cessation of chemotherapy.5 , 6 We wish to report the case of a man who fathered a normal infant while he was receiving maintenance chemotherapy for acute leukemia.Acute undifferentiated leukemia was diagnosed in August 1977, when the patient was 23 years old; he was placed on the MRC UKALL II protocol.
