Abstract
Five spp. of mites were found attacking pecan in Louisiana during the period 1946-1952. Tetranychus hicoriae McGregor appeared to be the most important sp. concerned in causing pecan trees to lose foliage, prematurely, in July, Aug. and Sept. Spray treatments of several acaricides, including parathion, wettable sulfur and EPN, effected satisfactory results against T. hicoriae but sprays of wettable sulfur were required to effect control of 2 additional spp., Brevipalpus sp. and B. savedi. It appeared desirable for pecan growers in n. Louisiana to use wettable sulfur and parathion in combination with fungicide sprays for the control of mites, black pecan aphid and diseases. This study indicated that 1 acaricidal spray applied in the latter part of May, followed by 1 or more applns. as needed in July, Aug. or Sept., may be required to prevent damage by the above mites. Promising results were obtained against heavy infestations of T. hicoriae in 1952 with aerial applns. of concentrated sprays of parathion and also with dust treatments containing parathion and sulfur. Further study is needed to determine whether aeroplane applns. of concentrated sprays of parathion are safe and practical for use against mites and other pests on pecan.
