Cardiolipin Antigen in the Kolmer Complement-Fixation Test: A Comparison with Kolmer Antigen

Abstract
A comparative study of the results of complement-fixation tests for syphilis using cardiolipin-lecithin-cholesterol antigen and standard Kolmer antigen on 1295 serums is reported. The cardiolipin antigen is more sensitive and only slightly less specific than the standard Kolmer. A comparison of the microflocculation and complement-fixation tests using cardiolipin antigens is also presented and shows that the sensitivity of the complement-fixation test approaches that of the microflocculation test. The new improved Kolmer cholesterol-lecithin antigen, also used with the last 440 serums, gives results almost as sensitive as the cardiolipin antigen without apparent loss of specificity. It is also noted that the antigen titer is best detd. by routine clinical testing after the range has been established by block antigen titration.
