Abstract
The accumulation of `new chronics' despite the improvements in treatment is contributing to the failure of mental hospitals to reduce their beds in the way originally predicted. These patients have a variety of needs which have to be met if they are to live with success outside the mental hospital. It is regrettable that these needs are barely discussed in the Ministry Memorandum Hospital Services for the Mentally Ill.Keywords
