Abstract
The symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorders among Vietnam combatants have had profound disruptive effects upon the intrapsychic functioning of these veterans. Recognition of the interpersonal consequences of this syndrome, in addition to the extreme intrapsychic conflicts, has become apparent through the progression of treatment modalities which have been utilized by mental health professionals in this area over the past 40 years. This paper examines the therapeutic evolution from the initial emphasis upon individual psychotherapy, followed by an increased emphasis upon group treatment, and concludes with the more recent focus upon marital and family therapy for combat-related stress disorders. Treatment issues for the Vietnam veteran which extend to the full range of interpersonal relationships within his sociocultural milieu, as well as more specific intergenerational issues with significant figures in his family of origin, are discussed. Keywords
