Abstract
It is shown that under certain conditions hydrostatic equilibrium becomes unstable in a conducting medium in the presence of a magnetic field containing a neutral point if the gas pressure is less than a limiting value. The motion resulting from breakdown of hydrostatic equilibrium in the solar chromosphere above complex sunspot groups could produce solar flares and cosmic ray particles. Keywords
