Self-Modulation of Light Output from Semiconductor Injection Lasers with Compound Cavities

Abstract
The influence of coherent optical feedback on the oscillation properties of injection lasers under CW and pulsed excitation have been investigated. In particular, it has been demonstrated that the light output from pulsed injection lasers with external optical feedback exhibits self-modulation phenomena whose mechanism is identical to that of the undulating light-DC-current characteristics. Careful investigation of the self-modulated outputs and the undulating light-current curves has revealed some new features of the coherent optical feedback effect. The self-modulation phenomena have been applied to the measurement of the transient temperature rise of an injection laser.
