Abstract
After one breath of N2 by a subject whose lungs previously were washed out by O2, the N2 record of the subsequent expiration exhibited oscillations of cardiac origin, the "pneumocardiogram". This pneumocardiogram was aligned with simultaneously recorded ecg by correction for the time lag due to movement of gas from the origin of the oscillations to the mouth. An attempt was made to analyze the origin of the pneumocardiogram by means of experiments on a preparation using excised lungs. Details of the pneumocardiogram were studied in normal subjects and in some cases of heart disease, and correlated with hemodynamic events. Keywords
