Abstract
We review the status of present knowledge concerning the mechanisms responsible for the onset of unsteadiness and subsequent transition to chaos in cavities heated from the side. Although most of the discussion concerns air-filled cavities with isothermal vertical walls in the Boussinesq regime, some Prandtl number and non-Boussinesq effects and the effect of isoflux heating are adressed. We also adress the issue of three-dimensional effects. We finally present some direct simulations of fully chaotic solutions for Rayleigh number values up to 1010.Keywords
