Abstract
Ninety-two patients with cochlear lesions, 20 patients with retrocochlear lesions, and 2 patients with both cochlear and retrocochlear lesions were tested on sweep and fixed-frequency Bekesy tracings for interrupted and continuous tones. Types I and II tracings invariably accompanied cochlear lesions, but in 2 instances they camoulfaged VIIIth nerve lesions. Type I tracings were found in normal-hearing patients with brain stem tumor, while results for the multiple-sclerosis patients were inconclusive. Observed limitations of Bekesy tracings detracted little from their importance in early detection of VIIIth nerve tumors. Keywords
