Abstract
The removal of naturally occurring viruses was studied at a full scale 9m3/sec (205 mgd) water treatment plant. Rotavirus was detected in 41 of 113 large volume samples collected after successive stages of the water treatment process. Virus recovery was highest during the summer rainy season when water quality declined. Rotavirus was recovered from 3 of 26 finished water samples which met acceptable limits for turbidity, total coliform bacteria and residual chlorine. Water from heavily polluted sources which meets water quality guidelines cannot be assumed to be virus free. Keywords
