Abstract
A previously reported group of 26 eyes with giant tears operated on by Taylor Smith from 1969 through 1975 is reviewed. The overall success rate was 69%. The method involved the use of a broad and wide scleral buckle, diathermy, and intentional incarceration of the giant tear flap in sclerotomies. These results are compared with those of others using techniques of vitrectomy, lensectomy, intraocular gas, patient rotation, and suturing of incarcerated retina. In perspective, the latter techniques do not seem to have improved the ultimate surgical outcome in giant retinal tears.
