Abstract

The lifetime of the

2 {}^{1}P

state of helium has been measured, using a modified Hanle-effect method, as

τ = (5.8 \pm 0.4) \times 10^{- 10}

sec. The oscillator strength for the

2 {}^{1}P - 1 {}^{1}S

transition determined from the lifetime is

f = 0.27 \pm 0.02
