Families Versus Institutions: Incongruent Role Expectations in the Nursing Home

Abstract
This study assesses whom nursing home administrators and relatives of residents deem responsible, the nursing home or the family, for performing essential tasks in the nursing home care process. Both groups tend to assign primary responsibility for technical tasks to the nursing home. However, substantial response discrepancies concerning nontechnical tasks imply that efforts to forge a closer partnership in the caring process between families and institutions may be hindered by ambiguity in the subdivision of nontechnical tasks and by insufficient institutional support of family involvement in them.
