Population of ResonantC12+C12States via the ReactionC12(O16, α)Mg24

Abstract
Excitation functions for the reaction C12(O16, α)Mg24 have been measured from Elab(O16)=62 to 110 MeV using a counter telescope at θlab=7.5°. Selective population of relatively few states at very high excitation energies in Mg24 [Ex(Mg24)>20 MeV] is seen. A possible correspondence is found between these states and the narrow resonances reported in C12+C12 reactions. In addition, a possible correspondence between averaged yields in C12(O16, α)Mg24 and gross structure seen in several C12+C12 reaction channels is cited.
