Abstract
The effect of theophylline on glomerular filtration rate was studied in nine, 5- to 19-day-old pretcrrn infants (mean wcight 1,115 gJ with apnea of prematurity. Glomerular filtration rate as inulin clearance and fractional sodium reabsorption were studied during a 2-hour control period, theophylline (5 mg/kgJ was infused for 1 h and renal studies repeated at the end of the theophylline infusion. In the 8 patients with hypotonic urines, frcc water and sodium clearances were calculatcd to determine the site of nephron sodium rcabsorption. There was a significant increasc in thc glomerular filtration rate in the post-thcophylline study period (p < 0.01 ). Urine volume, free water clearance, sodium clearance and fractional sodium reabsorption tendcd to change as well (NS).Keywords
