The Occurrence of Gasterophilus spp. in Texas and Some Tests with Insecticides for Their Control

Abstract
An examination of 508 horse stomachs,Feb.-Aug. 1950,revealed that most of the horses in the vicinity of San Antonio are infested with the larvae of G. intestinalis or G. nasalis. Only 3 horses were bot-free, one had 1659 larvae, and the avg. was 226 per horse. In laboratory tests 3d-instar larvae of G. intestinalis were found to be extremely resistant to dieldrin, aldrin, heptachlor, DDT, methoxychlor, TDE, benzene hexachloride, toxaphene, chlordane, and parathion. This observation was verified with infested horses. Toluene at 20 cc/100 lbs. of body wt. freed 2 horses of their bots.
