The Long-term Retention of Inhaled Cobalt-60

Abstract
The behavior of 60Co has been studied in 5 men for periods of up to 11 yr after accidental inhalation of the irradiated metal or its oxide. It is concluded from body radioactivity measurements that long term clearance from the chest may be extremely slow, with observed biological half lives of up to 17 yr, while for the clearance of systemic burdens of 60Co, a value in the region of 7 yr is suggested.
