Abstract
By the use of a liver storage test the utilization of vit. A and of carotene from different sources was studied and assayed in terms of biological values. The biol. value of vit. A contained in medical preparations and beef liver approaches 100; that of carotene in various plant materials is 33-67, except in lettuce, in which it is nearly 100. The utilization of carotene from various plant sources, or of carotene dissolved in different oils, varies according to the vit. E content of these materials. Vit. E increases the utilization of both vit. A and carotene, also the fecal excretion of carotene. Apparently it protects carotene and vit. A against oxidation in the intestine. This publication has 2 references indexed in Scilit:
