Application of the Intermediate Coupling Theory to the Scattering of Pseudoscalar Mesons by a Nucleon

Abstract
Tomonaga's intermediate coupling theory is applied to the scattering of pseudoscalar mesons by a nucleon. The scattering cross section depends on the cut-off momentum of the meson field and the coupling strength between the nucleon and the meson field. For reasonable values of the coupling strength, we calculated numerically the wave function of the meson field around a nucleon. By making use of these results the scattering phase shifts are calculated for various values of the cut-off momentum. Agreement with recent experimental results is not very good, although most of the qualitative features of the experiments are reproduced. A modification of the source function of the meson field can be expected to give a better fit with the experimental results.Keywords
