Abstract
Histological investigation of the gonads of 24 specimens of parrotfishes, belonging to several species, revealed the existence of secondary males and of females changing into males in this family. These findings are very similar to those having been described in protogynous wrasses. Considering various data in the literature on sexual dichromatism and spawning behavior, it may be concluded that parrotfishes are protogynous, just as some wrasses, to which they are closely related. Keywords
