Abstract
Quantitative bacteriological studies were performed on MSU specimens collected from females by one of 5 different methods. Results were compared to those obtained with SPA specimens collected at the same time. Even with the most scrupulous technique, MSU specimens are not always completely reliable. The figure of 105 bacteria/ml is not an absolute dividing line between ‘true’ bacteriuria and contamination. Infection may be present with as few as 103 bacteria/ml in MSU. SPA represents the best method of avoiding contamination. Catheterisation should not be performed for diagnostic purposes alone.
