Abstract
Experiments in the laboratory and on a sidewalk examined the influence of sex and physical attractiveness on personal distance. In the laboratory 30 male and female college students approached posters showing attractive or unattractive target persons, and subject-poster distances were measured with a tape. On a sidewalk an attractive or unattractive male or female interviewed 102 adult male and female passing pedestrians, and interviewer-S distances were recorded by a camera on a rooftop. Ss in the laboratory approached attractive targets more closely than unattractive ones, but on the sidewalk attractiveness had no effect. Keywords
