Relation of Viscosity to Drop Size: And the Application of Oils by Atomization

Abstract
This study indicates that fixed nozzle atomizers of the suction type can not be depended upon to apply satisfactorily oils of a wide range of viscosities. Atomizers constructed to apply oils of about the viscosity of kerosene were not effective in applying oils of higher viscosity. Many of the most effective cattle sprays contain viscous oils with high boiling points; these must be applied with atomizers adjusted to their particular viscosities or adjustable to a wide range of viscosities. The value S [center dot] N/T is suggested as a measure of the effectiveness of an atomizer in applying a given spray, S being the mean size of spray drops in sq. mm. obtained from a record of their diams. left on a glass slide covered with lampblack, N, the mean number of drops per sq. mm., and T the seconds required to spray 25 cc.
