POOL SIZE, TURNOVER RATE, AND RAPIDITY OF EQUILIBRATION OF INJECTED ISOTOPIC URIC ACID IN NORMAL AND PATHOLOGICAL SUBJECTS 12

Abstract
26 studies were made on normal, hyperuricemic, and gouty subjects as well as subjects afflicted with rheumatoid arthritis, polycythemia vera, and chronic myelogenous leukemia. The effects of colchicine, cortisone, and ACTH were investigated. In some expts. the injected labeled uric acid did not equilibrate immediately with body uric acid. The effect this has on the calculations is discussed. The assumptions implicit in the usual calculations are re-examined. Of 2 hyperuricemic subjects studied, the one with a family history of gout had a pattern of uric acid metabolism approaching that of the gouty. Colchicine, in some subjects, appeared to decrease the rate of uric acid synthesis. Both ACTH and cortisone seemed to possess a uricosuric effect but it was suggested that ACTH must have increased the rate of formation of body uric acid.
