Capacity and effects of Reed-Solomon codes on multi-pulse PPM in optical communications

Abstract
The capacity of multiphase pulse position modulation (MPPM) and the performance of Reed-Solomon coded MPPM in photon communications are evaluated. The transmission rate, energy efficiency, and error probability of MPPM are presented for a noiseless channel. It is shown that MPPM yields higher limits of energy efficiency and transmission rate than PPM in a band-limited channel. MPPM combined with RS codes achieves an energy efficiency more than twice that of RS-coded PPM in the practical range of error probability.
