Abstract
This chapter describes the larger-scale context within which public health researchers and practitioners should address both traditional and new challenges to population health. Topics covered include the scope of public health, population health and sustainable development, human ecology as a prime determinant of population health, explanations for recent trends in population health, and globalization and public health.
