Aged Deaths: The Nursing Home and Community Differential: 19761

Abstract
This research uses national level mortality data from the National Nursing Home Survey of 1977 and other sources to measure the differential in community and nursing home death rates. Although the nursing home mortality rate is estimated to be 2 to 2.5 times the agestandardized community rate, evidence is presented that suggests that the mortality differential does not represent an “excess” mortality risk attributable to institutionalization per se.
