FIXED DRUG ERUPTION FROM AUREOMYCIN

WE HAVE been unable to find any reference in the literature to a fixed type of eruption from any of the antibiotics. The literature includes reports of reactions of various types to aureomycin,1 but in no instance is the fixed type of eruption described. One of us (A. W.) personally experienced a fixed type of eruption from aureomycin. REPORT OF CASES In 1944, A. W. had an urticarial eruption as a result of taking sulfadiazine. In the five years preceding this episode, this drug and other sulfonamides were taken five or six times without reaction. Years before, pruritus without eruption and gastric upsets were produced by acetylsalicylic acid. The patient had an upper-respiratory-tract infection with sinusitis in the spring of 1949 for which he took 250 mg. of aureomycin every six hours for 14 days.
