Abstract
Glomerular filtration rate measured by 51Chrome-EDTA clearance, serum retention of β2-microglobulin and creatinine and, as a sign of proximal tubular function, urinary loss of β2-microglobulin, were studied in patients with pre-existing renal impairment during treatment with cefuroxime for 2 weeks. There were no signs of nephrotoxicity in 19 out of 20 patients treated with moderately high doses of cefuroxime, with or without concurrent administration of frusemide. Decreased renal function was observed in one patient who had received an overdose of the drug. Renal impairment occurring during treatment with cephaloridine or gentamicin was reversible during subsequent cefuroxime treatment. Keywords
