Abstract
THE blood vessels of the retina are one of the major target organs of diabetes. More than half the diabetic patients now living have a related retinopathy, and of these, 1 or 2 per cent have a progressive form that will relentlessly lead to blindness. Considered from another point of view, approximately 10 per cent of all blindness in the United States is currently attributable to diabetes.
