Abstract
The limitations of the health-information system, and of hospital discharge data in particular, are important aspects of today's "health-care crisis" in the United States. For many hospitals and communities, essential information is not available to evaluate the quality, efficacy and cost of the present health-services system, to administer the hospitals effectively, to plan and allocate resources and to formulate public policy. Although some current systems collect summary inpatient statistics, these systems provide only fragmentary data that satisfy limited needs. Keywords
