LARYNGEAL REFLEXES IN CHILDREN UNDER KETAMINE ANAESTHESIA

Abstract
Laryngeal reflex activity was studied in 8 children under ketamine anaesthesia by placing a radiopaque contrast medium in the pharynx through a soft rubber catheter via the nose or mouth. Laryngeal spasm developed in 4 patients. In no case was contrast medium detected in the lung fields in subsequent chest radiographs. The risks of the use of ketamine in patients with a full stomach are discussed, and atropine premedication is advised. Ketamine should only be used in the presence of experienced personnel, and when appropriate resuscitation equipment is immediately available.
