Abstract
The performance of a new photomultiplier with high‐gain GaP(Cs) first dynode is described. The photoelectron statistics are degraded by less than 5% as compared with 20% for conventional multipliers. The improved statistics make it possible, for the first time, to distinguish the emission of one, two, and up to five photoelectrons. Keywords
