Abstract
National information is seriously lacking concerning the number and types of board and care homes, their residents, and the quality of services provided. Shortcomings in current living arrangement classification procedures used in federal surveys are critically examined. A definition and classification system is proposed that would transcend state and local government differences caused by differences in licensure and regulations. Keywords
