TRIBROMOETHANOL-ETHER ANESTHESIA USED FOR TONSILLECTOMY AND ADENOIDECTOMY: An Analysis of 3,042 Cases Over an Eight Year Period

Abstract
IN THE PAST it has been customary to use general anesthesia for tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy in children but it is seldom used in adults. During 1939 my associates and I began using a combination of tribromoethanol with amylene hydrate (avertin®) to produce a basal anesthesia, following with ether by the open drop method, in patients of all ages. This report is based on 3,042 cases over an eight year period. The results have been so satisfactory that this has now become a routine anesthetic procedure for practically all such operations in our hospital; there is now only a rare case in which an operation is performed with any other form of anesthesia. The ages of patients undergoing operation for removal of the faucial tonsils or the adenoid or both have ranged from 5 months to 74 years. The age distribution is shown in table 1.
