REMOTE SENSING ESTIMATES OF SNOW WATER EQUIVALENT FOR HYDROLOGIC MODELLING

Abstract
Hydrological models are used by water managers and power utilities to simulate and to forecast streamflows. These models often use snow course data to estimate snow water equivalent over the basin. Passive microwave data from satellite may also be used to estimate areal snow water equivalent. Both methods involve assumptions as to the representativeness of the measured data. The paper compares the effectiveness of the two types of snow water equivalent data for simulating streamflow using a semi-distributed watershed model.
