Abstract
The decoupling transformation method is used to obtain a detailed parametrization of the 3d states in MnO and NiO using band energies calculated by Mattheiss (1970). Crystal-field splittings and exchange energies are derived and compared with previous theoretical work and experimental results. A new superexchange process, mediated by the metal 4s states, is shown to be important in these materials. Keywords
