Abstract

Colloidal aluminum hydroxide has been widely used for the treatment of peptic ulcer since Crohn reported its value as an antacid in 1929. There has been little information available concerning any untoward effects. Kraemer¹described frequent constipation and the occurrence of fecal impaction in two cases, but the majority of observers have not mentioned such complications. The following case illustrates the danger which exists and the unfortunate result which may occur when colloidal aluminum hydroxide is used in the treatment of certain cases of bleeding duodenal ulcer. M. F., a Negro woman aged 59, a widow, was admitted to the hospital complaining of generalized weakness and intermittent pain in the lower part of the abdomen of two weeks' duration.
