Abstract
Social competency in LD adolescents is examined developmentally. Within this framework, the LD adolescent experiences unique difficulties related to his or her particular learning disability. Effective training in social competency requires more than teaching adolescents specific appropriate social competency skills. A useful model to teach social competency skills is a reality‐oriented program exploring (1) interpersonal interaction, (2) increased knowledge of the learning disability, (3) improved coping strategies, and (4) enhancement of communication skills. The author reviews several stages in learning social competency skills and offers several cautions for group facilitators working with the LD adolescent.
