Experimental Argyrosis: II. Treatment of Rats Receiving Silver With 2,3-Dimercaptopropanol (BAL)

Abstract
Two rats received 23.2 g. of 1:1,000 AgNO3 over a total period of 456 days. Their eyes became pigmented. One rat, 18 days later, was started on intramusc. injns. of BAL (1:50 dilution in cottonseed oil). Nine injns. were given on alternate days, each dose being 0.2 mM/kg. The treated rat lost 30 g. in wt., and the control rat lost 6 g. On autopsy no lesions were found in either rat, and identical Ag deposits occurred in organs of both animals. Two other rats received 12.9 g. of 1:1,000 AgCl with added 1:300 Na2S2O3 for 514 days. Their eyes became pigmented. One rat, 18 days later, was given 18 injns. of BAL as above. The treated animal lost 25 g. in wt. but the control showed a 3-g. gain. On autopsy the results were similar to those above. BAL was incapable of mobilizing metallic Ag or AgO.
