Species Differences in the Action of Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors

Abstract
The influence of 5 MAO inhibitors on the 5HT content of brain was compared in rats, mice, guinea pigs and rabbits. It was shown that the dose of the MAO inhibitor which caused an increase of 5HT of 50% (EO50) and the ratio of these doses varied according to the animal species. Furthermore, the effect of 3 MAO inhibitors on 5HT in platelets or whole blood of humans and rabbits respectively was measured after daily administration of the drugs for 10 days. The relative potency of the drugs showed differences in humans and rabbits. Thus, on the basis of measurements in one mammalian species no conclusions concerning the effectiveness of MAO inhibitors in another species can be drawn.
