How to apply extended self similarity in turbulence?
Abstract
From Navier-Stokes turbulence numerical simulations we show that for the extended self similarity (ESS) method it is essential to take the third order structure function, taken with the modulus rather than the standard third order structure function. The latter (i) has different large scale behavior and (ii) does not show ESS at the transition from the viscous subrange to the inertial subrange, at least not in the Batchelor parametrization of the second order longitudinal structure function and its consequences for the third order one. We also focus on the scaling of the transversal structure function. The Re-asymptotic inertial range scaling is only seen beyond a Taylor-Reynolds number of at least 500.Keywords
