Abstract
Applying many‐particle methods the lowest excitation energy of the exciton is calculated for an insulator with small energy gap. Screening is taken into account by means of a self‐consistent k‐dependent screening function. At the finite critical gap Gc the excitation energy vanishes leading to the excitonic phase. Keywords
