Abstract
The first recorded case of histoplasmosis was observed at an autopsy in the Panama Canal Zone in 1905. There is evidence that people who have been born or have resided long in this area have a high degree of immunity to the clinical manifestations of histoplasmosis. All cases here reported occured among Caucasoid patients who came from the United States as temporary residents. In 29 cases the diagnosis was confirmed mycologically; in 5 others the lesions strongly suggested histoplasmomas. Solitary pulmonary histoplasmomas apparently do not break down or disseminate, but they usually cannot be distinguished from pulmonary carcinomas except by thoracotomy. In 78 consecutive cases in which thoracotomy was performed in the presence of an undiagnosed pulmonary lesion, there were 40 cases of cancer and 17 of histoplasmosis. Keywords
